~The Heir Transparent~

He is dying.

It’s a fact, albeit one he isn’t consciously aware of. He probably wouldn’t have believed it, had she told him only moments earlier. But there it is, as plain for all the world to see as the blood now leaking across his chest. Short, and sporadic, his breath continues for a few more seconds, before fading away entirely. Before he was ever aware that this was how it would come to pass, his beginning ends.

Across the sky, even now, a hundred thousand fireflies mass, twinkling as they descend to the mountaintop. The clouds part as the light of their bodies casts away shadow, and in the sky above something shines to life, as the Heir’s symbol is thrown up to shine down. One by one, the great pillars that shadow the plateau begin to glimmer.

On the moon of another world, it is enough, as white light blots out the wound and the blood fades beneath the glow of his skin. He has faced his trials and he has lost both home and family, and today, as the wind sings in the sky and his friends look on, finally, it will be enough.

It is a commonly held delusion in our society that heroes are born, and among us shine from the womb to the grave. I am here to tell you that this is not the case. True heroes are reborn. Created in a derelict laboratory from the ghostly remains of someone dearly loved, and with a spirit forged in the trials and tribulations of breeze and shade, a child was born. This is how a hero is created, not in the first stages of life, imbued with virtue at birth, but in the harsh sunlight of the waking world that would watch him persevere to discover great things within himself. It is these things which would pull him from the dredges of his old life and hoist him into the sky to become something else, something greater. A hundred thousand fireflies would watch as the cocoon was stripped away and the Heir would inherit what was really his all along. And so, on a windy mountaintop, one life ended and another began.

John Egbert had ascended.
